Humility

Are you the kind of person that immediately tosses out the user manual? I’ve proudly been figuring it out on my own for years. I've also been making videos on and off for years. From short films with my friends in high school to social and web content for employers. In the spirit of tossing the user manual, I’ve always done things my way. I’ve never once sat down to watch a tutorial on how to edit videos.
For years, it’s been one Google search at a time. And, honestly? It shows. My videos have never quite turned out how I envisioned them. So why not watch a tutorial? After some reflection I realized that I've taken a strange pride in being the kind of person who will “figure it out”.
To the dismay of my ego, I recently committed to watching a two hour Adobe Premiere tutorial on YouTube. I know, two hours isn’t much in the grand scheme of things. I should’ve done this years ago. But to my ego’s credit, it turned into more than I expected. Those two hours somehow stretched into six as I followed along, editing a personal video alongside the tutorial.
And you know what? Those six hours were the most informative and beneficial I’ve ever spent on video editing. For the first time, I wasn’t just guessing or patching things together. All those years of trial and error could’ve been so much easier if I’d just set aside my pride earlier and let myself be a beginner.
Here’s the lesson: No matter how long you’ve been doing something, there’s always more to learn. Humility—being willing to admit you don’t know everything—is what opens the door to growth. For me, that meant finally letting go of my stubborn pride and allowing myself to learn from someone else. It's just a hobby, and I’ve got a long way to go—but I'm a lot further along now than I was.
I’ve attached the tutorial I watched below, give it a watch if it interests you!
